The Tiger Awards, the three top prizes at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where handed out yesterday evening in the Dutch port city. The Tiger Competition is a showcase for first and second films from filmmakers around the world. The 2008 Tiger Awards went to Danish film Ma salama Jamil (Go with Peace Jamil) from director Omar Shargawi, Wonderful Town by Thai director Aditya Assarat and Flower in the Pocket by Liew Seng Tat from Malaysia. Each prize comes with €15,000 and a guaranteed broadcast on Dutch TV by main sponsor VPRO. The Fipresci international critics' prize went to the Chilean film El cielo, la tierra, y la lluvia (The Sky, the Earth and the Rain) from José Luis Torres Leiva, while the Dutch critics lauded Gruz 200 (Cargo 200) from Russian director Alexei Balabanov.

Berlinale 2008 juryThe complete Competition jury of the upcoming Berlin Film Festival was revealed today. Jury president Costa-Gavras, the Franco-Greek director of films ranging from 1990 Golden Bear winner Music Box to the more recent Le couperet (The Ax), had been announced announced earlier. The women in the jury are four: Danish director Susanne Bier, who directed Elsker dig for evigt (Open Hearts) and the Oscar-nominated Efter Brylluppet (After the Wedding); French actress Sandrine Bonnaire, who recently made her directorial debut with the documentary Elle s'appelle Sabine (Her Name is Sabine); German actress Diane Kruger, who could be seen in the Berlinale Competition film Goodbye Bafana last year and also played in many French productions including Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas), and Taiwanese-born actress Shu Qi.

2008 Berlinale: the complete Competition programme
2008 Berlinale Competition - Caos CalmoThe 58th edition of the Berlin Film Festival will kick off on February 7 with the world premiere of the US-produced Rolling Stones concert film Shine a Light, directed by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorcese. The Berlinale Competition programme counts a total of 23 titles, including the closing film Be Kind Rewind, another US production by French director Michel Gondry. Besides the US, most titles come from France with three, while host country Germany has only two titles in Competition. In the parallel Berlinale Specials section, another twelve films are presented, including half a dozen documentaries and new work from directors such as Amos Gitai and Simon Staho. The festival runs through February 17.

Sean Penn jury president at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival
2008 Cannes Film FestivalUS actor-director Sean Penn will head the Competition jury at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, festival organisers announced today in Paris. Penn won an Oscar for his role in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River, which was part of the Competition programme in Cannes in 2004. This year Penn wrote and directed the critically acclaimed drama Into the Wild. The 2008 Cannes Film Festival will run from May 14 to May 25 on the Côte d'Azur. Some twenty titles are normally in competition for the Palme d'Or. Last year's jury, presided over by UK director Stephen Frears, awarded the top prize to the Romanian drama 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days).
 
2008 Berlinale unveils first titles including Katyn, Kirschblüten - Hanami and Gardens of the Night
Katyn BerlinaleThe first titles of the 2008 Berlin Film Festival were announced yesterday, with three of the eight announced offerings from Europe. The festival, which will kick off on February 7, will host the world premieres of Kirschblüten - Hanami (Cherry Blossoms - Hanami) from German director Doris Dörrie and Gardens of the Night from UK director Damian Harris as well as the international premiere of Katyn, the WWII film and Polish boxoffice hit from veteran director Andrzej Wajda. The latter will be presented Out of Competition. Noteworthy non-European titles include Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood and a new work from veteran documentary maker Errol Morris. The full line-up of the 58th edition of the festival will be announced early next year.
