Oscar nominations Foreign Language filmsThe Oscar nominations were announced earlier today in Los Angeles, with European films making a relatively strong appearance in several categories. British period drama Atonement was one of the multiple nominees with a total of seven nominations, just behind US-produced frontrunners There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men with eight nominations each. Though it was not nominated for Best Director, Atonement did walk away with a Best Picture mention as well as nominations in the categories Best Supporting Actress (for young Saoirse Ronan); Best Adapted Screenplay; Best Art Direction; Best Cinematography; Best Costume Design and Best Musical Score. French Edith Pif biopic La môme (La Vie en Rose) snagged three nominations: for Best Actress (Marion Cotillard), Best Makeup and Best Costume Design.

Swedish Guldbagge awards go to 'Living', 'Knight Templar'
Du levande - You the Living GuldbaggeThe national Swedish filmprizes, the Guldbagge or Golden Beetle Awards, were handed out in Stockholm last night. The prizes went to both the high- and lowbrow, with arthouse favourite Roy Andersson taking home the Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Director Guldbagge for his tragicomic Du levande (You, the Living), while the local crusades-era blockbuster Arn -- Tempelriddaren (Arn -- The Knight Templar) went home with the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Guldbagge for Bibi Andersson, the Audience Award and special achievement awards for Costume Design and Stunts. A third achievement award went to the team responsible for the casting of the Finno-Swedish coming-of-age story Kid Svensk (That Special Summer).

2008 Foreign Language Oscar shortlist includes 'La sconosciuta', 'Die Fälscher', '12' and 'Klopka'
2008 Foreign Language Oscar shortlistThe US Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released their shortlist of contenders for the 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category today. The nine titles will be reduced to five for the upcoming Oscar nominations that will be announced on January 22. The nine titles are an eclectic mix and include several European titles: Austria's Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters), a concentration camp drama from director Stefan Ruzowitzky; Russia's 12, a remake of 12 Angry Men from actor-director Nikita Mikhalkov, Italy's La sconosciuta (The Unknown Woman) about an immigrant woman in Italy from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore; Poland's WWII drama Katyn from veteran director Andrzej Wajda and Serbia's Klopka (The Trap) from director Srdan Golubovic.
