Padelis Frantzis looks at the International Film Festival of Athens, which opens its gates for the 12th year. For reasons yet undefinable, a practice that last year made the audience and the critics become gravely opposed, seems to be now established: tickets are issued in advance, although the number of theatres remains extremely limited and there are no separate screenings for delegates and press. With all tickets sold out days before the opening and last year's memories of half-empty theatres still lingering, an article by Alexander Astruc written in 1948 and the image of a young girl with the programme of the Festival in her hands seem to offer the necessary distance from this frenzy. How much does cinema have to do with this reality?

Net zoals bij wijn is elke filmjaargang verschillend van kwaliteit; het ziet ernaar uit dat 2006 niet echt een jaar wordt om over naar huis te schrijven. Hoe ik dat weet? Ik kom net terug uit Venetië, en mijn Noord-Amerikaanse collega's zijn net terug uit Toronto. Deze twee, deels overlappende, filmfestivals luiden het najaarsseizoen in - normaalgesproken het hoogseizoen voor kwaliteitscinema - maar dit jaar werd er meer gesproken over de kwaliteit van het eten dan over de films.

Vorig jaar fluisterde men nog af en toe "meesterwerk" in de lange wachtrijen of tijdens een adempauze op het strand van het Lido. Maar goed, vorig jaar gingen de gesprekken over Brokeback Mountain, Good Night and Good Luck, C.R.A.Z.Y., Gabrielle, Les amants réguliers en het Russische Garpastum. De oogst van dit jaar: een hogere omzet van de restaurants in de buurt en halflege zalen - dit laatste ook doordat de organisatie een nieuw persvoorstellingssysteem invoerde waardoor niet alle journalisten werd toegelaten tot elke voorstelling, zelfs als de zaal half leeg was.

Recentemente estreado nos écrans portugueses, "Diários da Bósnia" é um documentário de Joaquim Sapinho, que se assume como o relato de uma incurssão pessoal num cenário de pós-guerra, onde o legado da destruição se filma lado a lado com a esperança ténue da regeneração. Retrato parcial de uma guerra da qual já havíamos perdido a memória.

Ieder jaar in juli komt in de Tsjechische badstad Karlovy Vary (bij ons beter bekend als Karlsbad) de crème de la crème van de Oost-Europese filmwereld bij elkaar voor het het jaarlijkse Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Het enige zogenaamde "A" festival achter het voormalige ijzeren gordijn is een onmisbare rendez-vous voor wie wil weten wat er leeft en loopt op filmgebied in de ex-communistische landen. Zoals al duidelijk werd in Cannes eerder dit jaar, gebeurt er heel wat: met name Roemenië en Hongarije zijn op dit moment dé landen waar een kleine filmrenaissance aan de gang is.
