Besides the announcement of the titles in Official Competition, this morning's press conference in Paris also revealed the names of the films in the Un certain regard sidebar, the Special Screenings and the Midnight Screenings and, last but not least, the names of the jury members who will be judging the Official Competition titles. Headed by UK director Stephen Frears ( The Queen), this year's jury includes Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung ( In the Mood for Love); her Australian colleague Toni Collette ( Little Miss Sunshine); their Canadian colleague and occassional director Sarah Polley ( Away from Her); French actor MIchel Piccoli ( Belle toujours); Nobel-prize winning author Orhan Pamuk from Turkey and directors Maria de Medeiros from Portugal, Marco Bellocchio from Italy and Abderrahmane Sissako from Mauritania. A complete overview of all the selected titles after the jump. |

The official Competition titles for the 2007 Cannes Film Festival were announed this morning at a press conference in Paris. The festival will open, as expected, with Wong Kar Wai's latest My Blueberry Nights and close, somewhat unexpectedly, with the Canadian title L'âge des ténèbres (The Age Of Darkness) from Les invasions barbares-director Denis Arcand. Notable is the strong presence of Eastern European films this year, including Béla Tarr's long-awaited The Man from London; Zavet (Promise Me This), the new film from two-time Golden Palm winner Emir Kusturica; the Romanian 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days from Cristian Mungiu and the two Russian titles Izgnanie (The Banishment) from director Andrey Zvyagintsev (who won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2003 for his father-and-sons film Vozvrashcheniye (The Return)) and Sokurov's Alexandra. Austrian director Ulrich Seidl's Import/Export and Fatih Akin's Turkish-German film Yasamin kiyisinda are also part of the Official Selection that is dominated by titles from the US. Homeland France has three titles in Competition: the new Catherine Breillat Une vieille maîtresse (lit. An Old Mistress); Les chansons d'amour (lit. Love Songs) from Dans Paris (Inside Paris) director Christophe Honoré and the animated Persepolis from directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud. A full list after the jump.

Marco Tullio Giordana, the Italian director of politically concious films such as La meglio gioventù (The Best of Youth) and Quando sei nato non puoi più nasconderti (Once You're Born You Can No Longer Hide), has started filming on Sangue pazzo (lit. Crazy Blood) another story that delves into the sociopolitical side of recent Italian history. The film tells the true life stories of Luisa Ferida and Osvaldo Valenti, two popular actors from the Italian Fascist-era cinema that were tortured and finally killed by partisans after the end of WWII. Sangue pazzo stars Monica Bellucci (N - Io e Napoleone/N - Napoleon and Me) and Luca Zingaretti (I Giorni dell'abbandono/Days of Abandonment) and co-stars Alessio Boni (who starred in both Giordana's La meglio gioventù and Quando sei nato...). The A-list rendez-vous for, in and about Eastern Europe and Eastern European film has announced the first titles that will be part of its 2007 edition. Running between June 29 and July 7, the 42nd Karlovy Vary Film Festival will take place in the Czech spa town of the same name (perhaps better known abroad as Karlsbad). Four competition titles have been announced so far, including the Korean Podo-namulul Be-a-ra (Pruning the Grapevine) from Min Boung-hun and three European titles. From the Czech Republic: the local hit Vratné lahve (Empties), the new film from the Oscar-winning father-and-son duo Jan and Zdenek Sverák ( Kolja/Kolya). From Poland: Plac Zbawiciela (Saviour Square), the new film from Polish director Krzysztof Krauze, who went home a tripple winner at the 2005 Karlovy Vary Film Festival for his painter biopic Mój Nikifor (My Nikifor). They will be joined by the new Russian film Prostye veshchi (Simple Things) from director Alexei Popogrebsky, one of the co-directors of 2003 critical hit Koktebel. |

The Official Selection of the 60th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be announced on Thursday, but some information has already been made public, including the selection of the Bruno Merle thriller Héros (Hero) as the opening film of Cannes' Critics' Week. The opening and closing ceremonies will be hosted by German model-turned-actress Diane Kruger, who is perhaps most famous for her roles in US productions National Treasure and Troy but who also starred in several French films including Les brigades du Tigre (The Tiger Brigades) and Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas). This year's masterclass will be given by recent Oscar-winner Martin Scorcese (The Departed), who will also officially unveil his World Cinema Foundation. As for jury presidents: British director and Oscar-nominee Stephen Frears (The Queen) will guide the Official Competion jury; French director Pascale Ferran (Lady Chatterley) will preside over the Un certain regard jury and Mexican actor Gael García Bernal (La mala educaciòn/Bad Education) will head the Critics' Week jury. |
