'Perfume' and 'Black Book' popular at home

Zwartboek film posterIt was a good weekend for local productions in the European North: Paul Verhoeven's Venice Competition entry Zwartboek (Black Book) sold over 100,000 tickets since its Thursday premiere in the Netherlands and in neighbouring Germany Tom Tykwer's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer was seen by more than a million people in the same period. Both titles had been anxiously awaited since they went into production. Verhoeven's film was his first Dutch-language project in 23 years, while Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is the adaptation of one of the most-read German novels of the 20th century, written by Patrick Süskind.

Fauteuils d'orchestre (Orchestra Seats) Oscar submissionAfter the unsurprising Dutch pick of Verhoeven's Zwartboek (Black Book) as their submission for the upcoming 2007 Foreign Language Oscar race, the French have decided on an equally commercial film: Fauteuils d'orchestre (Orchestra Seats). The film, a mosaic look at artists and common people in Paris, was directed by actress-turned-director Danièle Thompson and written by her and her son Christopher, who also co-stars in the film. The €8 million project  has been seen in France by over 2 million people since its release in February and was released on DVD last week. The future Oscar-hopeful's ensemble is led by the Jean Seberg of the current generation: Belgian actress Cécile de France.

Venice Film Festival Winners 2006The Venice Film Festival closed with more than a touch of glamour as well as several surprises, including the Lion for Best First Feature for Khadak (The Colour of Water), and the actual winner of the Golden Lion, the surprise addition of a second film from Chinese director Jia Zhangke called Still Life. French veteran director Alain Resnais won the Best Director Silver Lion, while Emanuele Crialese was awarded a Special Lion for "Cinematic Revelation" for his Sicilian immigrant drama Nuovomondo (Golden Door). A complete list of the winners follows.

Venice Film Festival 2006: winnersThe first prizes have been handed out on the Lido, where the Venice Film Festival is drawing to a close. The regal Stephen Frears drama The Queen and Emanuele Crialese's immigration drama picking up several prizes and the Spanish feature debut Azuloscurocasinegro (Darkbluealmostblack) going home with the Europa Cinemas label. The Golden Lion Cub or Leoncino d'oro, awarded by a jury of people under 26, went to the Russian visual treat Euphoria.
