Venice hauls in the glamour with 'The Magic Flute', Deneuve as jury president
ImageFrench diva Catherine Deneuve, recently seen as the regal queen in the comedy Palais Royal! and in a supporting part in the critical darling Rois et reine (Kings and Queen), will head the Venice Film Festival jury this year, festival organisers announced yesterday. The Gallic actress is a familiar face at the Lido, where Luis Buñuel's Belle de jour from 1967, in which Deneuve starred, won the festival's highest prize, the Golden Lion.

Karlovy Vary unveils titles of its 41st edition
Karlovy Vary PosterThe Karlovy Vary Film Festival has announced the full line-ups of its various competitions and side-bars, after having earlier unveiled its retrospectives and Czech participation in the festival. Fourteen titles will have their world premieres at the festival based at the spa resort of the same name, while many more will make their international or European debuts. The festival will run from June 30 through July 8 and will be covered live by european-films.net.

Cannes 2006: Loach's 'Wind' surprise winner

ImageThe oldest director at Cannes also proved to have made the best film: surprise winner The Wind that Shakes The Barley from 69-year-old Brit Ken Loach has won the 2006 Palme d’or or Golden Palm for his tale of two brothers who fought during the Irish war of independence, a story with strong contemporary resonance that was liked by the critics but not given much chance to win the festival’s coveted top prize.

'Das Leben der Anderen' takes nine Lolas

ImageThe national German Film Prizes, the Lolas, were awarded on Friday evening in Berlin, with the Stasi spy-drama Das leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) confirming its front-runner status by cashing in on seven of its eleven nominations, including the Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay prizes.
