Málaga: The Spanish Showcase
Bajo las estrellas

It is funny that Spanish broadcaster Antena 3 (A3) was the official sponsor of the recent Málaga Spanish Film Festival, and was so devoted -- during the ten days the festival lasted -- to vividly promote the Spanish movies that were part of the Official Selection in its news bulletins. Considering that A3 normally only talks about Hollywood premieres, this must have been some kind of mirage for the Spanish film industry. Now that the festival is over, A3 is back to reporting about the highly anticipated Hollywood smash hit of the moment: Frank Miller’s 300. Have they already forgotten about the weak Spanish film industry, until next year, perhaps? Is it really useful to overwhelm the audience during a few days with a lot of Spanish releases and then forget about promoting our very own cinema for the rest of year?

An intriguing true story about the biggest counterfeiting operation in history is the subject of the new film of Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky (the Anatomie films). Simply titled Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters), the WII story is based on an autobiographical account by Adolf Burger (played in the film by versatile Austrian actor August Diehl), but focuses mainly on the artist-turned-counterfeiting mastermind Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics), a Jew who was sent to a more comfortable concentration camp so he could lead a group of prisoners, including Burger, appointed to make false British and US bank notes in large quantities, destined to fatally weaken the enemy’s economy. Die Fälscher was part of the recent Berlin Film Festival Competition and the film’s director and stars chatted with the press during the festival. The film is released in Germany today (Thursday) and in Austria tomorrow (Friday).

The 2007 Shooting Star from the Netherlands is the versatile Halina Reijn. Last year, the 31-year-old Amsterdam-born actress had a small role in Van de Sande Bakhuyzen’s Ik omhels je met duizend armen (A Thousand Kisses) and the second female lead in Paul Verhoeven’s European blockbuster Zwartboek (Black Book). Reijn can currently be seen in Dutch cinemas in Tamar van den Dop’s Blind, a dark fairytale in which she plays an albino who falls in love with a blind man. The editor of european-films.net, Boyd van Hoeij, had a chat with the actress before she arrived at the Berlin Film Festival for the presentation of this year’s European Shooting Stars, where she represents the Netherlands.
