The Danes are the first Europeans out of the gate this year with their announcement of their 2009 Foreign Language Oscar submission. The country will submit Niels Arden Oplev's religious drama To verdener (Worlds Apart), which was a big hit in Denmark with over 300,000 tickets sold. Based on a true story, To verdener follows young Sara (Rosalinde Mynster), who comes from a family of Jehovah's Witnesses. When she falls in love with Teis (Pilou Asbaek), who is a non-believer, things become complicated. Denmark was last nominated for an Oscar in 2007, for the family drama Efter Brylluppet (After the Wedding) from director Susanne Bier.
Like every year, european-films.net will update the tally of Foreign Language Oscar submissions from Europe until it is complete. The complete list of last year is available here. The nominations for the 2008 Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2009. The awards ceremony will take place on February 22, 2009. |
