In an unexpected move, Danish director Lone Scherfig (Italiensk for begyndere/Italian for Beginners) has been replaced by Jacob Thuesen as the director of the upcoming Erik Nietzsche - De unge år (Erik Nietzsche - The Early Years). No official reasons were given for her departure, though according to Nordic Film News, local dailies have reported it might be because Scherfig will direct an international project instead. She already directed the English-language film Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself in 2002.
For Thuesen this would be his third feature film as a director, after his acclaimed debut feature Anklaget (Accused) and the documentary Freeway. He previously worked as an editor, and has collaborated with the likes of Susanne Bier and Lars von Trier. His acquaintance with the latter will come in handy for Erik Nietzsche - De unge år, which was written by “Erik Nietzsche” (a pseudonym used by Von Trier), who in his script talks about his own experiences as a young and inexperienced student at the Danish Film School in the 1970s. The project, which is billed as a comedy, has long been in development and had a cast ligned up including Danes Jonatan Spang (a stand-up comedian who would play Erik), Anders W Berthelsen, Jesper Riefenstahl and Martin Brygmann and Swedes Tuva Novotny and Joel Kinnaman. With a change in director, changes in the cast seem likely. (source: nordic film news)
