Vier MinutenThe German national film prizes, the Lolas, were awarded yesterday in Berlin. The lavish big-budget adaptation Perfume: The Story of a Murderer from Tom Tykwer went head-to-head with the intimate prison drama Vier Minuten (Four Minutes) from Chris Kraus; both films went in with eight nominations each. Perfume finally won in six categories, but rival Vier Minuten went home with the top Golden Best Film prize and the Best Actress award for Monica Bleibtreu (Moritz's mother). Josef Bierbichler was named Best Actor for his role in the African swindle drama Winterreise (its sole nomination), while upcoming director Marcus H. Rosenmüller was named Best Director for his comedy Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot (Grave Decisions).

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer has been a massive box office success in Germany and worldwide, making almost €100 million to date, with just less than half of that in Germany alone. It won Lolas for Frank Griebe’s cinematography, Alexander Berner’s editing, Uli Hanish’s production design, Pierre-Yves Gayraud’s costumes and the film’s extensive sound department for Best Sound. It was also awarded the Silver Best Film prize, tied with Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot, which also won Best Score and Best Screenplay besides Best Director for Rosenmüller. A comedy about death set in Bavaria, Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot was an unexpected audience success last year with over 1.2 million visitors.

Best Children’s Film went to Hände weg von Mississippi (lit. Hands off of Mississippi) from actor-turned-director Detlev Buck. The Best Supporting Actor prizes went to Devid Striesow, for his role as a Nazi commander in the concentration camp counterfeiting film Die Fälscher (Counterfeiters), and Hannah Herzsprung for her role in the family drama Das wahre Leben (Life Actually). Workingman’s Death from Austrian Michael Glawogger (read our interview) was crowned Best Documentary.

The Lolas are handed out each year by the Deutsche Filmakademie or German Film Academy. The winning films actually receive money as well as a Lola statue, including €500.000 for the Golden Best Film winner and €400.000 for the Silver Best Film winner. A full list of all the winners is available at the Deutscher Filmpreis website.
