The 60th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to a close earlier tonight with the awards ceremony and the official screening of the closing film L'âge des ténèbres (The Age of Ignorance) from Québec director Denys Arcand. The big winner of this year's festival was Romania; after taking the top prize of the Un certain regard section in 2005 for Moartea domnului Lazarescu (The Death of Mr Lazarescu) and the Camera d'or for last year's A fost sau n-a fost? (12:08, East of Bucharest), this year the Romanian film California Dreamin' from the late Cristian Nemescu won the Un certain regard section while the festival's biggest prize, the Palme d'or, went to the Romanian Competition entry 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) from director Cristian Mungiu.
The Best Director category was won by US director Julian Schnabel for his French drama Le scaphandre et le papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), while Fatih Akin won Best Screenplay for his complex yet contemplative Kieslowskian drama Auf der andere Seite (The Edge of Heaven). Best Actor and Best Actress went respectively to Jeon Do-yeon for her role in the Korean drama Milyang (Secret Sunshine) from Lee Chang-dong and Konstantin Lavronenko in Izgnanie (The Banishment) from Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev.
