After the earlier selection of Dutch entry Duska, three more countries have announced their submissions for the Foreign Language Oscar category for the 2008 Oscar ceremony. Austria has chosen Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters), a film that recounts the true story of a counterfeiting operation set up with concentration camp labour in Nazi Germany. The Austrian-German co-production was directed by Austrian Stefan Ruzowitzky and was part of the Official Competition at the Berlin Film Festival in February. Neighbouring Hungary picked the phantasmagorical triptych Taxidermia as its Oscar submission. The second film from director György Pálfi looks at three generations of men and how they are both united and divided by their primal urges. Norway will try to score a Oscar nomination with something lighter: the unusual romantic comedy Tatt av kvinnen (Gone with the Woman) from Petter Næss, the man who also directed the Oscar-nominated Elling from 2001.
Germany will announce its pick for the coveted Best Foreign Language Film prize on September 18. The country that won the Best Foreign Language Oscar just earlier this year with its Stasi drama Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) has shortlisted a total of seven titles for their submission: Am Ende kommen Touristen (And Along Come Tourists) from Robert Thalheim; Auf der anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven) from Fatih Akin; Das Haus der schlafenden Schönen (The House of the Sleeping) from Vadim Glowna; Mein Fürer - Die wirklich wahrste wahrheit über Adolf Hitler (Mein Fürer - The Really Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler) from Dani Levy; Strajk - Die Heldin von Danzig (Strike) from Volker Schloendorff; Vier Minuten (Four Minutes) from Chris Kraus and Winterreise (Winter Journey) from Hans Steinbichler. The nominations for what will be the 80th edition of the Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2008 with the awards ceremony set for February 24. A total of five films will be nominated from submissions from all over the world. Check european-films.net for updates on European submissions as they become available.
