Tricks (Sztuczki)Fresh off its Europa Cinemas Label win at the Venice Film Festival, where it was presented in the Venice Days section, Sztuczki (Tricks) from Polish filmmaker Andrzej Jakimowski also triumphed at home, where it was awarded the top national film prize, the Golden Lion, at the festival of Gdynia. The film tells the story of two siblings who live in the countryside and who practice tricks to defy fate. Sztuczki stars Damian Ul, Ewelina Walendziak, Rafał Gużniczak and Tomasz Sapryk  and also won the Best Cinematography honours at the Golden Lion ceremony for its cinematographer Adam Bajerski. It will open commercially in Poland at the end of October.

The Special Jury Prize was awarded ex-aequo to two horticultural titles: Maciej Wojtyszko’s Ogród Luizy (Louise's Garden) and Jacek Bromski’s U Pana Boga w ogródku (God's Little Garden). Tomasz Wiszniewski was named Best Director for his Wszystko bedzie dobrze (All Will Be Well), with Robert Wieckiewicz winning Best Actor for the same film (shared with Swiadek koronny / State Witness, in which he also stars). Danuta Szaflarska was named Best Actress for her role in Dorota Kedzierzawska’s Pora umierać (Time to Die), with the film also winning Best Sound.

Local hyphenate Jerzy Stuhr, recently seen as an actor in Nanni Moretti's Berlusconian satire Il caimano (The Caiman), was awarded the Best Screenplay prize for Korowód (Twist of Fate), a film he also directed and in which he also stars.

Zbigniew Stryj won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Robert Glinski's Benek, while Lukasz Palkowski’s Rezerwat (Preserve) picked up several prizes, including Best Debut Film, Best Supporting Actress for Sonia Bohosiewicz, Best Editing for Paweł Witecki and the Audience and Critics' awards. 
 
The jury was presided over by veteran director Janusz Majewski and judged a total of 31 films that played in competition at the festival. The festival's Out of Competition opening film, Katyn from Andrzej Wajda, will represent Poland in the upcoming 2008 Foreign Language Oscar race.
