After its tenth anniversary of last year, the European Shooting Stars event that takes place each year during the Berlinale has been radically changed for its 11th edition. This year, for the first time, an international jury has decided on the nine names that will go to Berlin from a pool of possible candidates put forward by all member countries, rather than simply accepting one candidate from each country. The nine 2008 Shooting Stars are: Nicolas Cazalé from France (Le fils de l'épicier / The Grocer's Son); Stine Fischer Christensen from Denmark (Efter Brylluppet / After the Wedding); Joel Basman from Switzerland (Luftbusiness); Anamaria Marinca from Romania (4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile / 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days); Andrew Garfield from the UK (Lions for Lambs); Hannah Herzsprung from Germany (Vier Minuten / Four Minutes); Zsolt Nagy from Hungary (Zuhanorepülés / Nosedive); Elio Germano from Italy (Mio fratello è figlio unico / My Brother is an Only Child) and Maryam Hassouni from the Netherlands (Kicks).
The jury consisted of German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus; UK actress Lucy Russell (herself a Shooting Star in 2002); Danish producer Vibeke Windeløv; Rome-based casting director Beatrice Kruger and personal manager Derek Power. The 2008 Shooting Stars will be presented to the public, the international press and numerous film industry professionals in Berlin during the Berlin Film Festival in February. Like every year, european-films.net will cover both the festival and the Shooting Stars in depth.
