After the worldwide success of Io non ho paura (I'm Not Scared), Italian director Gabriele Salvatores will again adapt a literary work from Niccolò Ammaniti: Come Dio comanda ("As God Commands"). The unusual story of a father and son relationship on the margins of Italian society is already a bestseller in Italy. Filippo Timi (In memoria di me / In Memory of Myself) will star as Rino, the neo-Nazi and alcoholic father who struggles to bring up his 11-year-old son after his mother abandoned them. 2008 Italian Shooting Star Elio Germano (Mio fratello è figlio unico / My Brother is an Only Child) will star as "Quattro Formaggi", one of the two sad-sack friends of Rino with who he sort of creates a surrogate family for the young boy. The small protagonist of the story is currently being cast. The screenplay for the adaptation of the 500-page novel was written by the director, Ammaniti and Antonio Manzini, who also co-wrote the screenplay for Il siero della vanità (The Vanity Serum), another Ammaniti adaptation that Alex Infascelli directed in 2004. Salvatores won a Foreign Language Oscar for his WWII comedy Mediterraneo in 1991 and directed the noir Quo Vadis Baby after the success of Io non ho paura. For Come Dio comanda, shooting is scheduled to start on February 4 in the northern Friuli Venezia Giula region. (source: cinecittà news) |
