German actress Veronica Ferres (Klimt) will headline the long-gestating adaptation of Marga Spiegel's war-time memoirs Retter in der Nacht, Filmecho reports. The film project will be called Unter Bauern (Among Peasants) and tells the story of Spiegel, a Jewish woman in her early thirties who decides to go into hiding in the German countryside in 1943 because of the ever-mounting threat of being deported by the Nazis. Together with her husband and child she found a safe place with courageous peasants in the central Westphalia region. Director Ludi Boeken (Deadlines) will start filming on the Franco-German co-production in the summer of 2008. The project had previously been in development as a potential star vehicle for Franka Potente.
